What are the Signs of a Healthy Heart?

When investing in general health for lifelong, it is crucial to have and maintain a heart-healthy approach to life. With growing age, keeping the heart healthy is very important. Thinking about how to check if having a healthy heart now or in the future? Read out the following signs/indicators of a healthy heart with Dr. Sujay Shad, one of the Best Cardiac Surgeon in India, who practises at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

  1. Heart rate- An adult's normal resting heart rate ranges between 60 and 100 beats per minute. It can be checked by feeling a pulse or with the help of a machine. It can temporarily rise during physical activity, anxiety, stress, or intake of medication. However, if the heart rate is abnormal for a prolonged period, it is a cause of worry.

  2. Energy levels- If feeling fatigued or low in energy when your body is at rest or even after performing light physical activities, it is an indication that your heart is pumping hard to serve all your body's needs. Having poor sleep is a sign of an unhealthy heart which when not addressed can lead to serious heart problems.

  3. Cholesterol- Unhealthy saturated fats or bad cholesterol are present in abundance in fatty meats and dairy products. Those who have high levels of bad cholesterol or total cholesterol have an unhealthy heart.

  4. Breathing- If a moderate level of physical activity causes shortness of breath, chest tightness, or chest pain, it means the cardiovascular system is unable to supply proper oxygen levels to the body to meet its needs. This means the heart is not healthy.

  5. Blood pressure- A healthy heart has blood pressure usually 120/80mmHg. In case of hypotension (low blood pressure) or hypertension (high blood pressure), the heart is said to be unhealthy.

  6. Good oral health- Oral and general health are linked to each other. People having healthy gums often have low blood pressure as compared to those with gum disease. Those who have healthy teeth and gums and maintain good oral hygiene are at low risk of heart disease, stroke, or heart attack.

  7. Heart recovery rate after strenuous activities- During exercises or high-intense activities, the heart rate rises. In case the heart rate does not come back to normal soon after stopping a workout or activity, the cardiovascular health is said to be not good. Ideally, a healthy heart has a very quick recovery rate.
