Coronary bypass surgery is a popularly performed surgery that is also known as bypass surgery. It is the most common bypass surgery performed in the body. This surgery is performed to provide new channels to supply blood to the heart and is performed when the heart's own blood supply gets restricted due to narrowing or blockage in the coronary arteries.

When one or more heart valves don’t function perfectly well, then two basic types of heart valve disease might occur: Stenosis and Regurgitation.

Stenosis (Narrowing)

Narrowing that obstructs blood flow. This will force the heart to work harder to pump blood through the narrowing. It also increases pressure in the heart before the narrow valve.

Regurgitation (Leak)

It is also called insufficiency or incompetence, essentially a leaky valve. Blood can now also travel backward. The heart’s pumping action becomes inefficient since part of the blood energized by the heart flows backward. Secondly, to maintain adequate forward blood flow in the face of inefficiency, the heart has to work harder.

Aneurysm means a localized outpouching or swelling of an artery. Aneurysm of the Aorta can be localized to the chest and is termed Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms, or in the abdomen, it is termed Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms.

Aneurysms often remain unnoticed till they grow to a substantial size. Then they can cause symptoms due to leakage of the aortic valve, like shortness of breath and palpitations. They can also cause pressure symptoms like aching or pain in the upper back, difficulty breathing due to pressure in windpipes, and sometimes hoarseness of voice because of a stretch of nerves operating the vocal cords.

  • Aortic dissection is a life-threatening emergency,

  • Patient outcomes are directly related to delay in surgery,

  • Early referral to an aortic center with 24×7 aortic service is vital,

  • A multidisciplinary casualty service, radiology, transfusion, anesthesia, surgery, intensive care, and cardiology team is crucial for excellent outcomes.

HOCM represents: Hypertrophic = Large size; Obstructive = narrowing causing obstruction; Cardiomyopathy = Affliction of the heart. HOCM is an affliction of the heart where the muscle towards the outflow is large and thick and obstructs blood flow.

HCM is a cardiac condition that occurs when the heart muscle is abnormally thick. A thickened heart muscle makes it difficult for the heart to perform its work, which functions to pump blood to the body. As a result, a number of HCM patients will notice shortness of breath. Some will get chest pain because the thickened muscle causes maldistribution of blood and nutrients to the heart muscle.
